Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco doesn’t use a single universal throat plate. The critical measurement is the throat opening width at the smoke shelf, not the firebox opening. Most Bellevue homes with Famco hardware fall into three series:

• Famco standard throat dampers - 8″ to 13″ round or rectangular plates, usually marked with a stamped model number on the frame edge. Check the right-hand side of the frame, looking toward the firebox.
• Famco top-sealing dampers - cable-operated units mounted at the flue terminus. These use a different gasket and cable sheath system; the throat plate is not the failed part.
• Pre-1990 Famco cast frames - wider pivot spacing (2.375″ center-to-center) that won’t accept current OEM replacement arms without frame modification.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Grinding or scraping when you operate the handle. The pivot pin has corroded or the throat plate has warped from heat cycling. Cast iron doesn’t bend back true; once the plate edge catches the frame, it wears both surfaces.
• The damper won’t stay fully open or fully closed. The tension spring on the pivot arm has weakened, or the notches in the control handle have rounded off. Either way, you’re losing conditioned air up the flue or risking smoke spillage.
• Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebox floor. Moisture is getting past a failing damper seal. In Bellevue’s climate, this accelerates through fall and winter even if you’re not burning - condensation runs down the flue and pools where the plate meets the frame.
• Smoke rolls into the room on light-off, even with the damper “open.” The plate is sitting cockeyed, usually because one pivot pin has sheared or the frame has settled out of square. This is the symptom that drives most calls.

There’s one safe check a homeowner can make: with the firebox cold and empty, shine a flashlight up the throat and look for the plate position. If it’s visibly detached or the pivot pin is missing, you’ve confirmed the failure. Don’t operate the handle further - a loose plate can jam sideways and damage the frame.

Everything past that point involves working at the smoke shelf, often with corroded fasteners that shear off. The throat plate weighs 8-14 pounds depending on size, and it’s awkward to maneuver through the firebox opening without dropping it onto the liner below.
