Copperfield dampers fall into three main families: the traditional throat dampers (TD series), top-sealing dampers like the Chim-A-Lator line, and the retrofit Lyemance and Lock-Top models that mount at the flue top. The throat dampers are the ones we replace most often in Bellevue homes built between 1975 and 2005. The TD-100, TD-200, and TD-300 series share a 3/16-inch pivot rod and a cast-iron plate that measures either 8×8, 8×13, or 13×13 inches. The frame width is the critical spec; a TD-200 plate will rattle in a TD-300 frame and never seal.

To identify yours, look up the flue from the firebox. The model stamp is usually on the frame’s right side, visible when the plate is fully open. If it’s rusted over, measure the frame opening and the plate thickness. For top-sealing models, we prefer OEM because the silicone seal and spring tension are model-specific. We carry both on the truck.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke rolls into the room on startup. The plate is warped or the frame has shifted, leaving a gap even when the handle reads “closed.” In Bellevue’s older Lakemont homes with original masonry, we’ve found frames that have settled 1/4 inch out of square. The fix is a full assembly replacement, not just a plate.
• Cold air falls down the flue when the damper is shut. The plate seal has degraded or the frame is rust-pitted. Top-sealing Copperfield models use a silicone gasket that hardens after 8-12 years of Puget Sound moisture cycles. Once it cracks, the seal is gone.
• The handle or chain moves freely but the plate doesn’t respond. The pivot pin has sheared or the linkage has corroded through. This is common on TD-series dampers where the 3/16-inch rod sits in a cast-iron boss that collects condensation. We replace the pin and bushings, or the full frame if the boss is cracked.
• The plate is stuck open or stuck shut. Creosote has glued it in place, or the frame has distorted from a chimney fire. Class III glazed creosote is the usual culprit in Bellevue; it melts and re-solidifies across the plate edge. We remove the plate during sweep, inspect the frame with the camera, and quote the replacement before any work starts.
• You hear metal rattling when the wind blows. The plate has detached from one pivot and is hanging by a single point. This will eventually fall into the firebox.
