Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex dampers span several venting product lines, and the repair part you need depends on which system is in your chimney. The DuraFlex SW and DuraFlex SS flexible liner systems use different damper collar dimensions and handle geometries. Check the metal tag on your flue liner collar, usually visible from the firebox looking up, for the series designation and nominal diameter. The SW series runs 3″ to 8″ in round configurations; the SS series handles higher-temperature applications and uses a heavier-gauge damper plate.

We source OEM DuraFlex damper assemblies through Haven’s buying network, and we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Famco where they cross-reference cleanly. The aftermarket route saves roughly $40 to $90 on parts for older DuraFlex 5.5″ and 6″ round installations, but we won’t substitute without showing you the spec sheet side by side. One compatibility gotcha in Bellevue’s 1960s and 1970s ranch stock: some original DuraFlex 6″ installations used a proprietary offset handle that standard aftermarket plates don’t match. Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin inside the damper frame has sheared or the cotter pin has corroded through. This is the most common failure we see in Bellevue homes within three miles of the lake, where summer humidity settles into the flue and accelerates rust on the internal hardware.
• The plate drops open but won’t stay closed. The tension spring in the damper frame has lost its set, or the detent notch has worn round. On DuraFlex units older than 12 years, this spring is typically the first component to fatigue.
• You feel a cold downdraft even when the damper appears shut. The plate has warped from heat cycling and no longer seats flat against the frame. What you should not attempt: removing the damper plate or frame yourself. The plate sits at the transition between the smoke chamber and the flue liner, often on a steel frame mortared into the throat. Dropping a tool or a plate component into the flue can damage a DuraFlex liner beyond repair. The tension spring on some DuraFlex models stores enough force to snap back hard if released incorrectly.
