• DuraFlex SS (stainless flex liner systems): Uses a clamp-on cap with a 3/4″ mesh screen and 304-grade stainless hood. Look for the “DuraFlex SS” stamp on the liner collar, usually visible from the firebox with a flashlight. Cap sizes run 3″ to 8″ in 1/2″ increments.
• DuraFlex SW (smooth-wall liner): Takes a slightly deeper cap with an integrated storm collar. The SW caps have a taller hood profile to clear the smooth-wall termination. If your liner looks like rigid pipe rather than corrugated flex, this is your series.
• DuraFlex Pro: The heavy-duty line with 316Ti stainless and a locking-band cap design. These caps cost more but handle higher BTU appliances and pellet inserts without warping.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the chimney face. Even “stainless” caps fail at the weld points or where dissimilar metals meet the galvanized top plate. In Bellevue’s salt-air influence from Puget Sound, we see surface corrosion start around year 7 on caps that face west.
• Mesh screen pulled away from the frame. Squirrels and raccoons test every cap in the Bridle Trails area; once the mesh separates, embers can exit and animals can enter. The underlying cause is usually undersized mesh gauge or a factory weld that fatigued in our wet winters.
• Hood sitting crooked or rotated. Wind gusts off Lake Sammamish can torque a poorly seated cap. The real problem is often a degraded top seal that let water in, froze, and pushed the cap off-square.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where a ladder meets a roofline in January.

What you can check from the ground: confirm the cap is still seated square, note any visible mesh damage, and listen for animal activity. If you’ve got binoculars and a clear sight line, photograph the cap from the yard. That photo is useful when you call.

Where DIY goes wrong: DuraFlex caps clamp or band to a flex liner that moves. Over-tighten the clamp and you oval the liner, creating a creosote trap. Under-tighten and the cap lifts in the next east wind. The transition from flex to rigid cap is also where carbon monoxide leaks develop if the seal fails.
